Australians confident when shopping online

Australians are confident they are protected when shopping online, according to the Visa e-Commerce Consumer Monitor.

The Monitor found that 78 percent of internet users surveyed are satisfied with the present level of online payment security and can confidently make purchases online knowing their information is protected.

Participants identified three factors in determining whether a website offers them confidence to make online transactions. These included: good security (77 percent), proof of consumer protection from online fraud (76 percent) and the availability of a merchant-sponsored return policy (76 percent).

Despite these positive figures, Chris Clark, general manager Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, Visa said there is still more than merchants can do to assure consumers they can safely make purchases on their sites.

The top concerns among the surveyed consumers when making online payments included: unauthorized access/hacking of retailer databases (53 percent), concerns about security of transactions (46 percent), misuse of payment card details by retailers (44 percent) and disclosure of their payment card number (42 percent).

Clark added: “It does not require complicated procedures or heavy investment in security to help boost consumer confidence in online shopping.”
