Job ads fall as workplace stress increases

In November, there were 48,000 fewer jobs advertised per week on the major job boards than October, according to the latest Olivier Job Index.

The fear of being fired is reaching fervour pitch for employees, with employers stressed about the possibility of job cuts. The Olivier Job Index fell 9.83 percent in November, down 16.03 percent on this time last year, signalling the fifth consecutive monthly drop.

Olivier group director Robert Olivier, believes that there is widespread fear in the workplace, as companies scale back.  “We’re hearing reports of changes in managerial attitudes with more pressure and more micromanagement. Some people are responding by keeping their heads down. I’ve seen others who are willing to work for less money so long as there is less pressure.”

The Advertising and Media sector has been hardest hit with a 25.78 percent reduction in job ads, with Administration and Clerical jobs following close behind with 21.14 percent. Graduates are also feeling the effects, with online opportunities falling by 20.2 percent.
