New iPhone app tracks outbreaks of disease

It seems there is an Apple iPhone app for just about anything. A new application for iPhone has been developed to allow users to track outbreaks of infectious diseases such as swine flu.

The application developed by researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston in collaboration with the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and called “Outbreaks Near Me”; allows users to track and report outbreaks of disease in their area.

Children’s Hospital Boston said in a press release, that it can pinpoint outbreaks reported in the vicinity of a user and let them search for additional information on any disease.

The “Outbreaks Near Me” program is associated with HealthMap, an online resource that collects and filters maps and disseminates information about emerging infectious diseases. The application also allows users to submit their own reports of outbreaks or photos to the HealthMap team.

The app is available for free for download from Apple’s iTunes App Store.
