News Corp may charge for online content

Rupert Murdoch, chief executive of global media empire News Corp has announced they may charge consumers for online newspaper content, in a bid to recoup the losses felt from the global financial crisis.

News Corp reported a 30 percent decline in profits on last year, recording a four quarter loss of $US203 million.

Murdoch says newspapers have been hit particularly hard, but is confident the worst is behind them.

He indicated that News Corp material on the internet may soon come at a price in order to support quality journalism.

“Quality journalism is not cheap and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalising its ability to produce good reporting.”
