Retail job figures improve

New ABS figures have shown that the retail industry is fairing well in the current economic climate; with interest rate cuts and the Federal Government’s cash bonus helping to protect retail jobs.

According to the Australian National Retailers Association CEO, Margy Osmond, the figures show a slowing in retail job losses.

“The ABS Labour Force figures for the February quarter show that the slide in retail job losses in 2008 has halted, with a welcome if fragile recovery in jobs over the last three months.”

She has pointed to a growth in part-time jobs, with 11,300 part-time jobs created since November, and 2,900 full-time jobs created.

Osmond believes that in the current climate, larger retailers are keen to hold onto their staff.

““Larger retailers are intent on retaining their staff and in some cases have put on more employees.”
