Small retailers generate big growth

By Jessica Stanic on Friday, 8 May 2009

The latest retail trade figures has revealed that small business retailers experienced a strong growth in turnover during March 2009.

Smaller retailers recorded a seasonally adjusted increase in turnover of 2.9 per cent in March which compares favourably with the 2.2 per cent increase in total retail trade.”

Small Business Minister Craig Emerson said that the strong growth is a direct result of the stimulus package.

“Small retailers are benefiting from the cash payments and tradies are getting work from the two-thirds of the $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan that is being devoted to infrastructure,” Dr Emerson said.

According to Dr Emerson retail turnover of smaller retailers has increased by 5.5 per cent since November, compared with 4.5 per cent for retailers as a whole.
