Only one in five Australians would support Kevin Rudd’s threat to call an early election if the Coalition blocks the Federal Government’s controversial emissions trading scheme in the Senate, the latest Newspoll, published in The Australian on Tuesday, has found.

According to reports in The Australian, the Newspoll results found that support for the Federal Government’s emissions trading scheme is still strong at 67 percent, but is down from 72 percent in October last year, and the majority want the scheme to be modified in parliament.

The poll taken last weekend also revealed that those “strongly in favour” of am emissions trading scheme fell from 35 percent in October last year to 29 percent last weekend, and just 19 percent would support Rudd’s threats to bulldoze the bill through the Senate with the threat of an early election.

As Rudd prepares to attend a UN climate conference in New York he is facing increasing pressure over the controversial scheme.
