Accountants charging “handling fees” for stimulus payments? What a joke!
I almost choked on my dinner last night when I heard that there are accounting firms out there charging a $45 “handling fee” for their part in forwarding on the $900 stimulus payment. What on earth are they thinking?
I have been involved in accounting firms for the past 20 years & I have always hated when firms tried charging clients a “handling fee” when they get tax assessments and the like from the tax office.
As the assessment goes from the ATO to the accountant’s mailbox to reception to partner back to reception & then eventually out to client, the process will take 3 to 4 days. Accountants will defend themselves and say that the ATO gets it wrong from time to time so there is a need to check the assessment. Fair enough 20 years ago when calculations were done manually. But in this day & age of computers and self-assessment, I reckon the ATO are correct in 99 percent of instances. So that is 3 or 4 days wasted that the client waits patiently for that cheque to arrive to pay for their rego, credit card bill or holiday. My firm has always had a simpler process where we show the client’s address as the mailing address for the ATO. We figure that if it was wrong then the client would contact me & we can sort it out then. And they get their refund cheque 4 days earlier.
So when the “Kev 07” stimulus payment got announced a few months ago there were alot of tax agents – who had their business address and trust bank account as the details for all their clients – that jumped up & down about it being wrong and how it would be a waste of administration resources during a busy time of year. So the ATO listened & told them the process to change the default address to the client direct, together with the client’s bank account. I got the notice from the ATO a few times. The ATO even placed adverts in the newspapers telling the public the same. So put simply it is nothing more than poor practice management for accounting firms to get a ream of $900 cheques arriving in their office. Yet they now have the hide to charge $45 for their poor practices??
I have also been wondering how these firms even came to the $45 figure to charge clients as well. It is hardly rocket science work, so you would be paying the pimply faced teenagers in the office to do it. Now I reckon that even an inefficient office clerk – if they are given 1000 cheques – could get a stimulus payment sent to a client, on average, every 3 minutes. So that’s 20 sent out per hour – or a handy $900 hour’s work! Pretty handy profit margin when you are paying that office clerk under $20 per hour isn’t it!!
The whole “handling fee” just reeks of poor client service (and poor understanding of the current economic situation) by these accountants. Their attempted money grab will backfire badly on them and I can assure you that they will lose alot of clients in the coming tax season. Thanks guys for sending customers our way!
What would you do if your accountant tried to pull this stint? Would be simply pay their $45 fee and shut up … or would you walk? I know what I would do!
I received a letter from the ATO on the 22nd April stating that my money should be deposited into my account within days.
As of Friday 1st May nothing had been done so I contacted my Tax Agent to enquire.
He proceeded to tell me that the ATO had put 200 odd payments of $900 into his account 3 weeks prior without sending him any information on whom the payments were to go to so therefore he is charging a $20 admin fee, after I supply him with a copy of my letter from the ATO mentioning my ATO number.
For 3 weeks he has been sitting on $180,000 in his account (probably getting a h*ll of a lot of interest) and wants to gain another extra $4000 for processing!
What a joke!
We will definitly not be going back to him again. My husband, myself and as many people we can sway will be steering clear.
It’s a bit ridiculous if you ask me. There are always money hungry people out there who will abuse the system and take advantage of others to further themselves. Hopefully this will be a warning to people to be wary of such practices and to think carefully when choosing an accountant.
Good on you Hayley – yes these accountants are not very good businessmen are they?? Can you believe I got a few newsletters this week from the accounting industry associations that I am a member of & there are accountants still complaining & how they are going to charge the fee. Guess they will learn the hard way when people starting walking from their business!
Our accountant has charged us a $27 admin fee. I was shocked and unaware this was occuring, he has also installed an answering machine as he does not wish to discuss the issue. After he finally returned my call he informed me that 200 cheques were being deposited into his account daily since the start of April. Im sure the interest on his trust account would pay for any out of pocket fees for his admin staff to press a couple of buttons and produce a cheque, 1 million times over. I promptly informed him, I nor my husband will be requiring his services and that I have also reported him to consumer affairs for unjust and improper service.
Go Kelly! Not sure what the consumer affairs department will do but I know that it would have made your ex-accountant realise what a dumb business decision they made. i wouldn’t mind getting paid $26.45 per hour simply to write out one cheque (note that I deducted the postage stamp!)
I completed my tax with online agency tax returns australia (never again). I have to have received my letter but no payment, fortunately they are only charging me $6 but I do believe alot of these tax agents are letting these payments sit in the bank for a while to earn a small fortunes of interest. It actually took the same company 4 weeks to pass on my tax return as there were supposedly issues and they needed to go over my return. I rang the tax department to confirm and they said the return had been processed and cheque posted to my agent. OOOOOOh makes me mad, there are some money hungry people out there that take any opportunity to make a buck.
hayley holland and amanda from nsw. acocuntants CANNOT earn interest from trust accounts. it is illegal so do not assume they can.
the payments go into this account and a notification would be sent to the accountant from the ato letting them know who the money is for. however, the ato was not prepared for the 900 stimulus and when some clients rang up they changed the taxagents details instead of their own, cancelling that notification. now how will the accountant know who the money is for?
the fee was for admin costs, when you dont receive your bonus who do you call? the accountant, and who is paying them to sit there and listen to you? and when they have to ring up the ato because you didnt receive your bonus…who is paying them for that time? and forwarding on notifications? stamps? someone to mail it out, someone to pickup the mail and tranferring funds into accounts? imagine having 50 people a day ring wondering where their bonus was ON THE FIRST DAY IT STARTED. and just so people are aware if money goes to the wrong account it is very expensive to trace that money, around $30 per transaction and if you do 10 transactions in one go you looking at a fee of $300 just because one person didnt update their details.
My accountant has sent me some forms to sign signing over the two stimulus payments for my husband and myself, which they are witholding, to their firm in payment for preparing tax returns for my company and personal returns for my husband and I .
What do you think of that?
I think that your accountant stinks “Mrs Narrabeen” … that really makes me mad!
I have just been charged $660.00 + GST for a single group certificate tax return for myself, & my husband is a soul trader who invested in a new ute for work , so we are entiltled to the 30% govt rebate.
I do all the BAS\’s on e-tax myself except for when we purchased the car i had the accountants do the bas for that quarter, but entered all other information on e-tax.
All info was given to the accountants, & thought we had a organised, not too complecated tax return.
I was charged at a CPA rate, of $200.00 an hour, but had the taxreturn completed by a bookkeeper, so i found out after speaking to the principal accountant.
Whom was very surprised that i was questioning the amount billed, \”as he had never been questioned by a client before\”.
I feel sooo ripped off as our previous tax return was $300.00 less!!!
I plan on going elsewhere for now on.
Fees charged v service provided is always a fine line between accountants & clients … the clients always want it for less whilst the accountants always want more!
I can’t comment on your particular situation Kate (eg quality of information, reconciliations, etc) but I recommend in future that no matter who you choose you ask for a quote in advance before any work is commenced. Sometimes it is bit like the dentist or going to the car repair man … you don’t want to be surprised & left twith a big bill (and sour taste) once the job has been completed.
I went through tax returns australia website for my 2007 -2008 tax return, it took 9 weeks to get my tax return off them when it was recieved by them after 6 days. I cannot get my economic stimulus money from them that they have had since July 21st 2009. Now the company is de-registered and Im at my wits end….
The best article i have ever seen in my life.Keep on posting and have a blast for the upcoming posting.
