Fostering entrepreneurship among students is perhaps not always top of the list for universities.

For many students, the idea of starting their own business doesn’t even seem like a possibility. But that’s exactly the mentality that Project Pitch is aiming to change.

Kicking off this weekend, Project Pitch is a competition exclusively designed for students of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and has some big plans for growth.

“We realised that within the university context, there really was no space for students to learn what its like to take part in a pitching competition – and so this is different to a standard university pitching competition,” Clare Giles of the UTS Business School Alumni Relations told Dynamic Business.

Affiliated with the UTS Business School and the student entrepreneur society, Project Pitch gives students a safe space where they can come along and have an educational version of a pitching competition weekend. The hope is that they’ll spin off some ideas that will turn into viable businesses.

“These people will really shape the space of entrepreneurship in Australia,” Laura Earl, Social Clubs and Programs Manager at UTS Union added.

“We’re thinking that if these guys come along, and even if their business doesn’t actually take up – they might think ‘oh that one didn’t work – but what’s the next one? And then they might start participating in other start-up pitching weekends, and meet people from the community and realise that it’s a really welcoming and supportive community,” Giles said.
