Churning demand for locally made organic butter

A group of 23 organic dairy farmers in Victoria are having such great success with their locally made butter they have been able to double production in under a year since launching.

With the focus now extending to other organic dairy products, the Organic Dairy Farmers of Australia Co-op (ODFA) have big plans for their manufacturing hub run out of a formerly disused factory in the tiny town of Camperdown, Victoria.

The increasing number of people choosing organic butter has seen the co-op go from selling in a selection of local retails, to stores nationwide. Production has since increased from 100 tonnes of butter annually, to 200 tonnes.

CEO Bruce Symons believes the uptake is reflective of a demand for quality organic dairy products. “By making the butter ourselves people know they are getting a real, local, quality organic product, rather than an imported organic product, which is generally the only alternative,” Symons said.

The factory is now staffed by 30 people, with the number expected to grow alongside its products range.
