Poor mobile and app performance means lost opportunities for business

Local consumers who utilise the mobile web aren’t having their expectations met, with the vast majority reporting disappointment courtesy of poor mobile and application performance.

According to a new study by Compuware Corporation, mobile users want exceptional web experiences and highly satisfying, convenient, on-the-go mobile site speeds regardless of their mode of access – but most aren’t receiving this.

The survey of over 500 Australians found mobile users’ expectations aren’t being met, with the majority of users experiencing slow or unreliable mobile and application performance.

62 percent of mobile web users expect websites to load as quickly, almost as quickly, or faster on their mobile compared to their home computer, but over a third reported that websites load more slowly on their phone.

Over half (54 percent) of local mobile web users had problems accessing a website in the past year and 45 percent had a problem accessing an app.

Over 82 percent of users said they would access websites more often from their phone if the experience were as fast and reliable, with 41 percent revealing they are unlikely to return to a site they’d had trouble accessing from their phone, and 64 percent saying they wouldn’t recommend the site.

“User expectations for mobile continues to increase, but companies in Australia are not meeting mobile users’ need for fast and reliable experiences,” Compuware ANZ Application Performance Management Director Rafi Katanasho said.

“As a result, many companies are failing to take advantage of the opportunities being provided by increased mobile access.”
