Aussie workers looking overseas for new opportunities

Almost half of Australian workers would consider relocating overseas to pursue a larger and more attractive salary, making it vital for local employers to capture jobseekers attention before valuable talent heads offshore.

Randstad, a specialist recruitment and HR services company, attributes the employment trend to the personal and professional reflection that occurs at the start of the new year. According to CEO Fred van der Tang, the January to March period is seen by employees as “the ideal time to explore potential career opportunities”.

The study revealed that 31 percent of Aussies are tempted by career opportunities abroad, despite these opportunities offering equal or lower pay.

The “adventurous” Aussie spirit that drives many workers to make the exciting move overseas can, however, have a negative impact upon the national employment market.

Van der Tang warned that the current “significant skills shortage in many crucial industries” necessitates action from employers to retain their workers, and attract new ones.

While he conceded that remuneration remains the most attractive aspect of a career, he maintained that employers can capture jobseeker’s attention by offering “work/life balance, flexible working hours, ongoing training programs and opportunities to progress”.
