Employees consider switching organisations

Over a quarter of Australian employees are considering leaving their job in the next year, according to new findings released by Roy Morgan Research.

A survey of over 8,000 full- or part-time Australian workers surveyed in the year to June 2014 revealed 28 per cent of the nation’s employees are thinking about changing organisations in the next 12 months, while 23 per cent did not agree nor disagree, or could not say.

“At a time when companies are looking to downsize, delay or restructure, retaining the right talent within your organisation has never been more important,” Michele Levine, CEO, Roy Morgan Research, said.

“Yet more than a quarter of all employees are currently considering changing jobs and another 1 in 5 aren’t sure.”

While 75 per cent of Australian workers claim to be satisfied with their current employers, 1 in 5 of those are still considering switching companies.

The mining industry was found most likely to have dissatisfied employees and the second most likely to see employees contemplate an organisation switch.

Other industries with the most employees considering changing organisation include retail, recreation and personal, manufacturing and electricity, gas and water.

“To deal with high levels of churn, HR and Recruitment companies need to be able to understand their corporate clients’ goals and directions and to operate more as strategic partners when it comes to sourcing and retaining the best staff, as well as developing outplacement programmes as a result of redundancies,” Ms Levine said.

“It’s therefore vital for these firms to understand the people making the hiring decisions in businesses, whether HR personnel, executives and ground-level team managers.”
