Australia, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant cities, is also home to a thriving rural and regional entrepreneurial community.

From small agricultural businesses to tech startups in rural towns, these ventures play a crucial role in economic growth and development. However, entrepreneurship in rural areas can be challenging, isolating and often a cause of anxiety. Mentorship, networking and community support are therefore not only vital for the mental health and well-being of regional business owners, but also vital for the success of these businesses and the communities they are a part of.

As the founder of businessDEPOT, John Knight is passionate about entrepreneurship and the impact it can have on individuals and communities they belong. Having grown up in regional Australia himself, Knight understands the challenges that businesses in remote locations face – limited access to resources, smaller talent pools, and less visibility in the broader market. Having literally been born into a regional family business, he knows firsthand the struggles of family business too – that’s what drove him to create businessDEPOT, a one-stop shop for the services, resources and support business owners need to help them and their companies to thrive.

Knight believes that every business, no matter where they are located, should have access to the tools and guidance they need to succeed. By offering a variety of services and support, from accounting and legal services, to capital raising, business broking and marketing services, businessDEPOT is helping to level the playing field for all businesses. Whether these business owners are remotely located or not, the vision remains the same, to empower more entrepreneurs to achieve their goals.

Says Knight, who is also a member of Entrepreneur’s Organization Queensland, “Mentorship is one of the pillars of support for entrepreneurs, regardless of location. In rural areas, however, where access to resources and business guidance may be limited, mentorship becomes even more valuable”.

“Mentors share their knowledge and experiences, providing insights that help entrepreneurs navigate hurdles unique to their industry and location. Moreover, mentors can provide emotional support in times of stress or uncertainty, serving as a sounding board for ideas and offering encouragement when challenges arise,” he continues.

Another vital area of support for rural and regional entrepreneurship is networking. Building connections within the community and beyond enables entrepreneurs to tap into a diverse range of skills, knowledge and resources. In rural areas, networking can be particularly powerful, as it allows entrepreneurs to form collaborative partnerships and share resources to overcome common challenges. Networking events, conferences, and industry associations create opportunities for entrepreneurs to meet like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and build relationships. They can be few and far between though in regional areas, especially if you don’t want the whole community knowing your business affairs.

Entrepreneur’s Organization is bringing these opportunities to regional areas throughout by connecting their members with others in similar circumstances, allowing their network of entrepreneurs to learn from each other’s experiences, find support and brainstorm innovative solutions to shared problems. With options for both face-to-face and virtual connection, the organisation is committed to providing much-needed support in the regions.

With the isolation and lack of infrastructure faced by those operating outside of inner-city locations, feelings of loneliness are often exasperated. The desire to succeed in a challenging business environment, often with limited support and resources, can place further pressures on the business owners and create issues around mental health.

This is where community support plays a crucial role. Rural and regional populations have a strong sense of solidarity and community-lead initiatives. One way Entrepreneurs Organisation helps with this is by creating business groups that catch up regularly to share their challenges and experiences, while at the same time being able to draw upon the broader community of members where necessary. Such support can be invaluable and the catalyst for success for the individual that is feeling ‘lonely’ in their business.

“We all know that entrepreneurship in Australia is not confined to urban locales and is an essential driver of economic growth and community development. However, the mental health challenges faced by entrepreneurs in these areas often go unnoticed. When paired together, mentorship, networking opportunities and community support [whether your local community or a wider community of like-minded individuals] can pave the way for a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem that fosters not just economic success but also mental health and well-being.”
