1 million independent contractors get free handbook to help ‘get the contract right’

Australia’s one million independent contractors now have access to a free handbook from the Government to help ‘get the contract right’ at the start and avoid headaches down the track.

Legal 101 for small businessThe ‘Independent Contractors: contracts made simple handbook’ was launched in Hobart today by Small Business Minister, Senator Nick Sherry, at the Australian Government’s bi-annual Small Business Forum in Hobart.

“Getting the contract right at the start is the best way to improve business relationships and avoid disputes down the track,” Senator Sherry said.

“Contracts made simple is a quick reference guide with links to useful websites and phone numbers to make sure contractors have easy access to the facts.

“It has been produced in consultation with both metropolitan and regional independent contractors and the feedback is that the guide is an excellent resource.”

Senator Sherry also launched the revised and updated Independent Contractors: the essential handbook and its audio version.

“The new audio version of this very popular publication is ideal for listening on the go, as contractors can download it to their computers, iPods or MP3 players,” Senator Sherry said.

“Independent contractors are important to the Australian economy and the ABS estimates there are more than one million around the country.

“The Government supports genuine independent contractors and the right to choose independent contracting as a career.

“And for the first time ever, an Australian Government is providing much needed guidance on issues directly affecting independent contractors and their hirers to help save them time, money and headaches in their business dealings.

“The guides explain the rights and responsibilities of parties in an independent contracting relationship, but will also help those parties build strong business relationships and better manage risk,” Senator Sherry said.
