Power Balance wristbands have ‘no scientific basis’ – refunds ordered by ACCC

Power Balance wristbands and pendants have ‘no credible scientific basis’ and have been removed for sale by Power Balance Australia after Australian Competition and Consumer Commission intervention.

Power Balance WristbandPower Balance Australia was misleading in its advertising claims about the alleged benefits for the Power Balance wristbands according to the ACCC. Power Balance Australia Pty Ltd claimed the wristbands improve balance, strength and flexibility and worked positively with the body’s natural energy field. It also marketed its products with the slogan “Performance Technology”. The ACCC raised concerns that these claims were likely to mislead consumers into believing that Power Balance products have benefits that they do not have.

Consumers who bought the Power Balance wristbands will be offered a refund directly from the manufacturer, small businesses such as pharmacies and sporting stores involved in the supply of Power Balance wristbands to consumers should withdraw the products from sale and contact Power Balance Australia for more information.

“Suppliers of these types of products must ensure that they are not claiming supposed benefits when there is no supportive scientific evidence,” ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said today.

“Consumers should be wary of other similar products on the market that make unsubstantiated claims, when they may be no more beneficial than a rubber band,” Mr Samuel said.

Power Balance has admitted that there is no credible scientific basis for the claims and therefore no reasonable grounds for making representations about the benefits of the product. Power Balance has acknowledged that its conduct may have contravened the misleading and deceptive conduct section of the Trade Practices Act 1974.

The Power Balance wristbands were widely promoted in the media by various sporting celebrities. The wristbands were sold around Australia in sporting stores and also on the Power Balance website www.powerbalance.com.au

“When a product is heavily promoted, sold at major sporting stores, and worn by celebrities, consumers tend to give a certain legitimacy to the product and the representations being made,” Mr Samuel said.

“Retailers that continue to sell the product with misleading representations on the packaging are warned that they may be open to action from the ACCC,” Mr Samuel said.

To address the ACCC’s concerns Power Balance has provided the ACCC with court-enforceable undertakings that it will:

  • only make claims about its products if they are supported by a written report from an independent testing body that meets certain standards
  • publish corrective advertising to prevent consumers from being misled in the future
  • amend the Australian website to remove any misleading representations
  • change the packaging to remove any misleading representations
  • offer a refund to any consumers that feel they have been misled, and
  • remove the words “performance technology” from the band itself.

Consumers with refund enquiries can call Power Balance on 1800 733 436, small businesses selling Power Balance wristbands should contact your supplier for more information.

Im very nterested in the media slamming of these products.
My son, whom is 9yo was given a Power Balance band for his birthday from an Uncle, because he believed it would help my son with his Rugby, Swimming & surf lifesaving racing.
Im a huge sceptic, I catogorize these Power Bands in the same line I do religion (Jesus, god, holy spirit and all that jibberish).
But I allowed my son to believe in something that would help him believe/ achieve unbelievable strenght & power. LOL
To my amazment, in the space of a month, his swimming times were unbelievably faster, in regards to normal progression, his rugby attitude to tackling & physical assertivness was on another planet prior & his aura & singlemindedness to win at all costs when competing in nipper races was just crazy.
He also had a bit of swagger / arrogants to him as he believed by being one of the few kids that had one, he was of a special breed.
Now Im not bagging the product cause we as humans have the right to buy what ever the hell we want.
We have either been fooled by a favorite spotsman that these products can make you do the unthinkable.
I dont mind that at all, Like all sports drinks, sports shoes, compression wear (Skins), 99% of the desired effect revolves around how much we want to think it makes us feel.
I would of paid $1000 for a band, to see my son achieve what he thinks is out of reach for his abilities.
Now remember, those that are not believers in the product need only not to buy it, the others that do under faith itself, are no defferent to the millions that go to Church every week, praying for the souls that dont believe!!

What a bunch of retards you all are. Ever heard of the placebo effect, if you haven’t then by wearing the PB and performing better you are displaying it. The ACCC has stepped in because PB have made claims that are not substantiated by facts. For myself I am glad we have bodies such as these protecting us from blatant deception. If you believe in the band then get rid of it and believe in yourself for once. I assume most supporters are also religious, having the need to believe in something other than themselves, that gives direction, purpose and ability…

    It’s a scam, simple.

  • I purchased a Power Balance wristband at the end of last year. Can I also get a refund?
