Apple iPhone available in Australia, with free applications

The Apple iPhone is on sale from today. Together with it, Apple has also made available 500 native applications, of which 125 are free for iPhone customers.

Customers at the App Store, which works on a Wi-Fi system, can download and start using immediately. A range of topics, including games, business, news, sports, health and travel are covered. Applications with a price tag will be charged to the user’s iTunes account.

“iPhone represents a new software platform for developers, combining the most advanced mobile operating system, sophisticated developer tools and a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly sell and distribute their applications right onto every iPhone,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The reaction from developers has been very, very positive and we’re opening the App Store with over 500 native iPhone applications available for immediate purchase and download.”

The App store will notify customers whenever updates are available for their applications.

From today, iPhone 3G is available at all Australian Apple, Optus, Telstra and Vodafone retail stores.
