Aust urged to boycott China over Google attack

The Greens are urging the Australian Government and businesses to boycott China after an alleged attempt by Chinese spies to hack into internet search giant Google.

Google has already indicated it may cease to operate in China following a cyber attack aimed at gathering information on human rights activists, and Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has said the Australian Government should follow the example set by Google.

“Google must be commended for standing up today and sending such a strong message – not just to the Chinese Government, but to the rest of the world,” she said.

“It’s time that the Australian Government acted to ensure we play our role in trying to tackle the human rights violations that are going on in China – and Australian companies that have a vested interest in China also need to look at the leadership shown by Google,” she added.
