Campos Coffee saves the Earth with KeepCup

Campos Coffee have teamed up with KeepCup to introduce reusable takeaway cups at Campos Coffee in Fortitude Valley, saving an estimated 3.5 million wasteful paper cups this year, or the equivalent of 49 tonnes of landfill.

Designed in Australia and made from a durable polypropylene material, the Campos KeepCup has already proven popular with regulars keen to do their bit for environmental sustainability. Co-owners John Ronchi and Eugene Phua sourced 20,000 Campos-branded cups in two sizes as part of their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their business, saving approximately575 trees in the process.

“Most paper cups take 50 years or more to biodegrade, so getting your morning coffee in a Campos KeepCup makes a significant difference,” Mr Ronchi said “Not only that, but the coffee actually tastes better. All paper cups have a wax lining, so drinking from a Campos KeepCup gives a more genuine flavour.”

Anecdotal research shows that the average corporate worker drinks eight takeaway coffees a week and a single paper cup requires more than double its weight in raw wood to produce. On the other end of the spectrum, a Campos KeepCup is made from recyclable materials and has an average lifespan of four years.

“If one café can save 3.5 million paper cups in one year, imagine what other cafes in Brisbane could achieve,” Mr Phua said.

Campos was named Australia’s Best Café as well as the producer of Australia’s Best Coffee in the 2009 Lifestyle Channel I Love Food Awards.

Thanks to the introduction of KeepCups, Campos will this year save an estimated:
• 3.5 million traditional paper cups
• 575 trees
• 10.1 tonnes of plastic lids
• 49 tonnes of landfill
• 3,500 GJs of energy
