New website helps SMEs manage their carbon footprint

Carbon Compass, a unique online hub for businesses seeking and offering sustainability solutions, was launched today by the Victorian Minister for the Environment and Climate Change Gavin Jennings.

Carbon Website

The site, www.carboncompass.com.au, is an initiative of Carbon Down, a partnership between VECCI and Sustainability Victoria aimed at reducing the environmental impact of Victorian business, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Carbon Compass is an online business community, bringing together businesses to share their sustainability solutions and gain practical advice on how to lower emissions, according to VECCI Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Kayler-Thomson.

“Our research shows there is a huge appetite from SMEs for assistance to reduce their carbon footprint, and great potential for them to make a real impact – up to a third of the nation’s targeted emissions.  But many businesses are unsure where to start and who to trust.

“Equally, we also know there are countless ingenious businesses out there with cost-effective solutions. Harnessing the power of the collective, Carbon Compass was conceived to connect solution seekers and solution providers. It will become the first port of call for businesses looking to access free, easy-to-understand sustainable information.”

Trusted solutions and participants

The design of Carbon Compass lets businesses quickly locate sustainable solutions relevant to their needs. Solutions can be searched by industry, function or natural resource (e.g. water) that the SME is looking to save.

Each business can also submit sustainability solutions to Carbon Compass. For quality control, solutions are screened by Carbon Compass before they are posted.  The value of the solution is then determined by the number of times it is accessed and used, and the number of reviews and number of stars awarded by the community.
