It’s the time of year where old state rivalries rear their ugly head, and suddenly everyone is a football fan.

Queensland coffee addicts will breathe a sigh of relief to learn that Merlo Coffee – recognisable for their blue cups and logo – are switching their signature colour for the duration of the State of Origin (May 26 – July 11).

Owner Dean Merlo says the brand has copped tongue-in-cheek flak every State of Origin, so this year alongside the temporary cups, all staff will also wear maroon shirts. He says that the decision wasn’t a difficult one, but has required significant planning. “We decided to turn maroon last year, but given production and logistics required, we had to bide our time,” Merlo says.
