Commonwealth Bank spam hits phones

The barrage of spam being sent out to Commonwealth Bank customers is now infiltrating phones and SMS.

According to reports in The Sydney Morning Herald, the sophisticated Eastern European cyber criminals behind the scam are now calling offices and homes several times a day through an automated system, informing customers they have an error on their account and need to ring an Australian phone number to rectify the problem. They are then prompted to enter their credit card number and security code, which is then used to make fraudulent purchases.

St George, NAB and Bank of Queensland customers are now also being targeted, with the emails managing to evade spam filters.

Commonwealth Bank spokesman Steve Batten said the bank had traced the scammers to Russia or somewhere in Eastern Europe.

“The good news is a number of these phone numbers have actually been identified and closed down by the Australian Federal Police,” he said.
