Costco plans to open second Sydney warehouse

Warehouse supermarket chain Costco has gained planning approval for its fourth Australian store, to be built at Casula in Sydney’s south-west.

The new store at the Crossroads Homemaker Centre will be part of a two-part $41 million development, with a brand outlet centre also planned for the area.

The Casula development is expected to be a 14,000 square metre warehouse, which is hoped will attract up to 700,000 shoppers a year, while the brand outlet centre is expected to accommodate over 60 stores.

Though plans to build in the Liverpool Council region were revealed last year, Costco has faced a number of hurdles in getting the development approved.

The Council’s public exhibition period closed in October 2012, with councillors then having to vote for changes to the local environment plans in order to allow for the development to go ahead.

The NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure approved zoning changes to the Liverpool Local Environment Plan this January.

Liverpool Council has highlighted the Costco development as a way to drive local employment and increase economic growth in the area, with the stores projected to create over 650 jobs.

The Casula warehouse is one of three new stores expected to be built in Australia in 2013, and will be the second Sydney store.
