Facebook have recently announced a slew of changes to the social networking site, in a bid to compete with new social networking sensation Twitter.

On the agenda is an Open Stream API which will allow third-party developers to write programs that use Facebook’s data.

It will give programmers direct access to pictures, video and text shared on the social networking site, but users will still have control of their own private data.

The change has been viewed as an attempt to compete with Twitter by streaming real-time conversation.

Facebook have also adopted new rules governing the social network, with documents indicating users own their information, not Facebook.

An earlier attempt by Facebook to control users data, changing it’s terms to ensure that they had complete ownership of everything posted on profile pages, caused outrage amongst the Facebook community.

Facebook have now withdrawn the terms, with users given control and ownership of their own content.
