Government MPs argue over franchise reform

Tension is simmering over reforms to the franchise industry, with arguments erupting between state and Federal Labor MPs.

A report recommending changes to practices in the $128 billion-a-year franchising industry, has been left untouched by the Federal Government, angering South Australians Labor Government MP Tony Piccolo.

Mr Piccolo has been reported as saying that if the Government does not act soon, South Australia would introduce it’s own laws, claiming it is important the reform is introduced as quickly as possible.

With many in the industry believing national laws are required, rather than state-based ones, Mr Piccolo said, “having state-based laws is not desirable, but how long do you wait?”

Among those changes outlined include the provision of good faith bargaining between franchisers and franchisees, enhanced powers for the ACCC, and monetary policies for breaches of the code.
