High Court rules stimulus payments ‘valid’

The High Court has ruled the stimulus payments are valid and that the payments of $900 to 8.7 million tax payers can proceed as planned.

The payments were in doubt after legal academic Bryan Pape challenged they “exceeded the government’s taxation powers” and were simply a “gift.”

The full bench rejected Pape’s claims, and ruled the legislation valid.

Senior law lecturer at the University of New South Wales, George Williams said this morning that the payments were never in doubt.

Professor Williams said that taxpayers would get their money “one way or another” because the government would use any method possible to ensure taxpayers receieved their payments.

The payments will be made from Monday.
