Telstra has announced immediate availability of the much anticipated HTC Desire Google Android mobile phone, a week earlier than anticipated.

HTC Desire TelstraThe HTC Desire is an evolution Google’s Nexus One hardware which is manufactured for Google by HTC with some minor tweaks, most important of which is HTC’s proprietary SenseUI user interface.

Telstra has taken expressions of interest from customers for the HTC Desire since the phone was announced last month, with Telstra’s Ross Fielding, Executive Director of Mobility Products at Telstra citing the strong level of interest shown as reason for bringing the HTC Desire stock into stores a week earlier than planned.

“In response to massive interest from Australian consumers, Telstra has moved the launch of HTC Desire forward by almost a week to today. ” Mr Fielding said.

“The accelerated launch means Australians will be the first in Asia-Pacific to experience this breakthrough smartphone.”  he said. “Telstra’s flagship [T]life stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will be the first to stock the new smartphone with Telstra stores across Australia receiving deliveries by the end of the week.

“We have also contacted customers who pre-registered their interest in HTC Desire to ensure that they are amongst the first to be offered the smartphone.

Telstra has also responded to the strong demand for the HTC Desire by locking in a longer exclusive distribution agreement for the phone than was initially planned.

“We are also pleased to announce that HTC Desire will now be exclusive to Telstra for six months – a three month extension on our previous arrangement.” Mr Fielding said.

Initially the HTC Desire will be available from three [T]Life stores, with the rest of Telstra’s stores and dealers expected to receive stock by the ANZAC long weekend.

Telstra are offering the HTC Desire with a number of plans, starting at $60 per month or can be purchased outright for $779.
