Instagram passes Twitter with 300 million users

Instagram claims it has attracted over 300 million active users, passing the 284 million users on Twitter.

The Facebook-owned social networking service has grown substantially this year, with its user count rising over 50 per cent from the 200 million active users recorded at the end of March.

“We’re proud to announce that there are now more than 300 million Instagrammers,” Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom wrote in a blog post.

“Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day.”

Instagram has been making big moves to ensure a growth in users, including the installation of an advertising system in an effort to attract businesses.

Mr Systrom also announced that Instagram would be cracking down on spam accounts, revealing that users may see their follower counts change.

“We’ve been deactivating spammy accounts from Instagram on an ongoing basis to improve your experience,” Mr Systrom wrote.

“As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count.”

Facebook is still the most-used social media platform in the world, with around 1.3 billion active members at last count. While it remains the overall leader, it has seen the least growth among the world’s popular platforms. According to data from the Global Web Index, Facebook has only seen 2 per cent growth in the last 6 months, while microblogging platform Tumblr has grown by 120 per cent.

According to SocialMediaNews.com.au, Instagram is the fifth most popular social media platform in Australia, with 4 million active Australian users registered in September. Facebook stands firmly in the lead with 13,600,000 users, followed by YouTube with 13,100,000 users.
