Melbourne company puts safety first with iPhone app
A small Melbourne company has developed a new iPhone application designed to protect users from an attack anywhere in the world.
The application, I am Safe, works like a panic button that is programmed to send recorded voice, SMS and email messages to a predetermined list of five family and friends once activated. A Google Map is also activiated to track the user’s location.
The software’s designer, Tim Hine, CEO of Xpertise Mobile, was inspired to come up with the safety app following the deadly attack on Australian backpacker Britt Lapthorne in Croatia.
The app will initially only be available to iPhone users but will soon be ported to other platforms including Google’s Android. The app costs $US2.99 ($3.30), an offer on for a limited time only, and will then change to $US6.99.
Hine was adamant he did not intend to profit from Lapthorne’s memory and was in fact hopeful that the app would prevent further tragedies.

So here you are, being mugged in a dark area in some foreign city, and you are expected to grab your handbag, search for and pull out your phone, switch it on and press that button…. while the attackers are beating on you.
Yep, that would have certainly saved Britt >.>
um..you could only track the persons movements if the iphone is activated and with the person..in a kidnapping situation..this would probably fail..basically cause the offender would most likely discard the iphone..
Just purchased. Sounds like a good idea to me actually. Sure there are some times when you might get jumped and have to take your chances on your own (that\’s why I did Karate for 8 years), but chances are you\’ll have some forewarning that something\’s about to happen. There is some talk of Apple including this as an inbuilt functionality to future updates, but for $4 AUD it\’s a pretty good insurance policy now.
This is a fantastic idea. With any luck, it will have an ability to be run in a hidden state by default. Chances are, if you get mugged, the scumbag will take your iphone. Would be a lovely supprise for him when the police kick his door down!
If this guy isn’t trying to profit from this why is he charging people everytime they use the thing?? Surely getting slugged for the cost of the phone calls and\or data is eneogh.
Being a mother of daughters that are now travelling and living life independently, I have had calls from them when they have felt in an unsafe situation and they wanted to let me know where they were and make it obvious that they are on the phone. This is a fantastic idea and basically cheaper than a cup of coffe!
Great idea. Well done.
Jax from nsw – Atleast it would send the last known position when it is activated.
Damon from Perth – he did not “intend” to profit from Lapthorne. Its a once of cost (plus network charge which is normal). Read the story.
