Murdoch to charge for online newspaper access

In a move that is set to outrage thousands across the country, News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch has announced a plan to charge users for access to all his newspaper websites, urging all publishers to do the same.

Speaking at a cable TV industry gathering in Washington, Murdoch argued that the “proliferation of free content undermines the industry’s business model.”

He said that everything on the net is free, but that “needs to change.”

With online ad revenue shrinking, publishers are rethinking whether charging for access would generate revenue, or whether readers would stop visiting their sites altogether.

Murdoch’s company News Corp. is one of the few newspapers in the US that currently charges people to read it’s news on the Web. Murdoch’s News Corp. owns newspapers in the US, Britain and Australia.
