NAWIC announces winners of women’s construction awards

Queensland’s construction industry recognised the contribution of its female members last night, announcing the winners of its NAWIC 2010 Qld Crystal Vision Awards.Construction Industry

The National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) 2010 Qld Crystal Vision Awards acknowledge women who are currently succeeding in the industry and aim to increase the number of women considering a career in the industry. According to recent Government statistics less than three percent of construction trade workers in Queensland are women.

The night’s most prestigious award, the Brisbane City Council Crystal Vision Award, was won by Buildmore Group Company Director Sam Sheppard. In 2009 Ms Sheppard initiated and headed the “Buildmore Women into Building Housing Showcase” project, which involved women from all aspects of the industry coming together to design, construct and supply an environmentally sustainable home.

The Awards help to highlight the innovation and skills of the women in this industry, according to NAWIC Qld President, Nicholle Sparkes.

“The judges have chosen 11 outstanding Queensland women who have clearly demonstrated their commitment to the construction industry,” Ms Sparkes said.

“The Awards Night was a sell-out with more than 500 people in attendance. It was great to see our winners and nominees supported by so many family members, friends and colleagues,” Ms Sparkes added.

Along with Ms Sheppard, other winners included Associate for BVN Architecture Jessica McConochie who won the Laing O’Rourke Award for Achievement in Design; and Construction Manager for Bovis Lend Lease, who won both the Thiess Award for Innovation and the Department of Public Works Award for Achievement in Construction.
