New geographical domain names good for business
NSW Premier Nathan Rees has welcomed the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announcement of location and category specific domain names.
The new generic top level domains (gTLDs) will enable local businesses to register a domain name that is specific to their location, eg dot sydney (.sydney) or to their particular sector, eg dot food (.food).
Rees said that the measures will help “promote our cities as destinations for business and tourism” and that they will be a “boon” for the IT sector.
“NSW supports the idea of registering geographic and city names such as dot sydney, dot berlin or dot london.”
According to University of Chicago economics professor Dennis Carlton, ICANN’s proposal will “increase output, lower price and increase innovation.”
The new gTLDs are expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.

There are many who believe this will create confusion and trademark issues for many businesses.
The proposed new domain name extensions are a money grab by ICAAN/domain registrars and a kick in the teeth for small business operators. To own an extension is too expensive for small business but they’ll now have to register 4 or 5 domain names instead of 1 or 2.
Australians expect and prefer a .com.au domain names. How many .mobi or .id names do you currently see?
the best extension is .tv because we all know what it means , soon the interent changes for the worst ….www.worldne.ws
On the other hand if a business in Perth has the .com or .com.au domain it means a business of the same name in NSW can’t use it. The opportunity to obtain .sydney or .perth would be beneficial for small business in my opinion.
