Online shopping popular in crisis

Coremetrics has revealed that online shopping had become more popular in the economic crisis, as Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) shoppers flock to the internet in droves to peruse global e-commerce websites and make online purchases.

Coremetrics’ most recent e-commerce benchmark report, which surveyed the buying habits of more than 75 million shoppers worldwide, shows a 60 percent increase in the average order value for ANZ purchases made during March, April and May 2009; with an average spend value of between $48 and $54 per order.

Kevin Mackin, general manager for Coremetrics ANZ, said: “These figures represent a smarter modern shopper… consumers are becoming more e-commerce savvy.”

Mackin believes that the global trend has been “screaming at us for years” that online shopping is on the up.

“More and more people will shop online to scour for bargains, find specific products and save themselves the time of shopping in-store.”

He said businesses that do not have an online presence need to jump online, and for those that do, they must ensure their website is fresh and up-to-date with the latest products and deals.

“Companies out there looking for new customers online need to be offering cross and up-sell opportunities to existing customers, compelling product and service offers to prospects.  They need to know who their customers are, how they interact with the business and what their buying habits are.”

Agreed – I stopped shopping at Harry and David after I found out they my put the item in your cart- but it doesn’t mean they have it in stock. And if I had read the fine print I would have known that they “substitute” at will.
    Gee how convenient for them

Savvy includes practical education and interest in the highest level of encrypted aka buyer protection. After noticing how everything from Https and regular SSL has been broken, I shop at websites that have extended validation SSL, only now. It’s denoted by a bright green url bar and is currently one of the only ways to combat the phishing scams, and completely protect your privacy.
