Optus and FetchTV launch IPTV service

Optus has stepped into the internet TV fray, matching Telstra and Foxtel with the unveiling of its competitively priced IPTV service, Optus MeTV.

Working in conjunction with FetchTV, the hybrid service combines free-to-air TV and subscription channels, a personal video recorder (PVR), user interface and web video, for $9.95 per month on a two-year contract.

Included in the package is a set top box with in-built digital tuner and PVR with one terabyte hard drive capacity. The service will also have an add-on mobile application.

Users will have the option to add a subscription TV pack (Kids, Music TV, Factual with more genres and world Channels to be added soon) for $6.95 per month, with on-demand movie rentals also available.

According to Optus Digital Media director Austin Bryan, the way we consume content is rapidly changing.

“Optus Digital Media is dedicated to developing products and services that meet this consumer need and we are thrilled to be bringing this unique TV offering to Australian households.”

The internet TV service will offer users access to social media applications like Facebook and Twitter, watch web video content from YouTube, play games and check the weather.

Optus also has plans to integrate exclusive digital apps such as Optus News into the service.

Optus MeTV will launch later this week to all existing Optus customers, with the mobile counterpart expected to be available for download from late November this year.
