With the news that employers are using social networking sites and search engines to research job applicants, university graduates are taking to the web to actively monitor and screen their online identity for private information, before they embark on a job search, a survey has revealed.
According to Onetest’s 2009 Opinion Survey of Australian University Graduates, two in three (66 percent) of graduates are actively monitoring their online profiles to improve their job prospects.
Onetest head of psychology Ms Cherie Curtis said this is encouraging to see.
“Given how easily you can find personal information about people online, it is a positive sign to see such a large percentage of graduates making the smart move to monitor and screen the information about themselves which is accessible online, to potential (and existing) employers,” she said.
The survey also revealed that graduates are looking to ‘up-skill’ as a way to boost their appeal and value to employers, with nearly one in four (24 per cent) indicating they have looked at further study or training.
According to Onetest CEO Steven Dahl, the recruitment drive for 2010/11 is shaping up to be the most competitive in years.
