Twitter clears path for advertising

Twitter has paved the way for advertising on the site by revising the social networking website’s terms of use.

The new terms, put in place over the weekend, have been amended to allow for advertising on the site. The new terms state: “The services may include advertisements, which may be targeted to the content or information on the services, queries made through the services, or other information.”

However, Twitter founder Biz Stone said in Twitter’s official blog that there were no plans to introduce advertising immediately, rather they would like to “leave the door open for advertising” and “keep our options open.”

The micro-blogging site has exploded in popularity since its introduction in 2007, with 45 million users worldwide. The move follows an earlier announcement by the company of the possibility of introducing paid-for accounts for companies wanting to have a brand presence on the site.
