UN says cyberspace governed by international law

A new report from the United Nations has reiterated that international law applies to a state’s use of cyberspace.

The Australian Government welcomed the report, which found that states’ use of information and communications technologies falls under the realm of international law and the UN Charter.

In addition, the report highlighted the role of confidence building measures to build trust, transparency, and confidence between states, and to help reduce the risk of conflict in cyberspace.

The issue of what state’s are doing to govern the internet has continued to make headlines around the world, particularly in light of international conflict over the handling of whistle-blowing websites such as Wikileaks.
