Victory for Abbott as Senate rejects ETS
New Liberal leader Tony Abbott is sure to be celebrating today after the Senate blocked the Federal Government’s controversial emissions trading scheme.
The emissions trading scheme was voted down 41 to 33 by the Senate around midday. The new Liberal leader Tony Abbott had previously labelled the scheme as Kevin Rudd’s “big new tax” and said that his party will have a credible climate change policy that will not include an emissions trading scheme.
Upon hearing of the decision, ousted leader Malcolm Turnbull took to his blog to express his disappointment.
“This is a very disappointing result, contrary to the national interest and the interest of the Liberal Party,” he wrote. “Australia needs to get on with the business of cutting its greenhouse gas emissions.”
The rejection of the legislation gives Prime Minister Kevin Rudd a trigger for a double dissolution election early next year.
