The rumours surrounding just when Microsoft would be releasing Windows 10 can be put to rest. Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 10 will be available for PCs and tablets from July 29.

If you have Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, a free upgrade to Windows 10 is all yours. Those that purchase a Windows 8.1-enabled device before July 29 will still find it available and Microsoft has said that certain retails stores will be upgrading the device for customers.

Many using Windows may have noticed a small icon appear on the system tray placed at the bottom end of their screen. That’s no questionable virus-triggering button. If you want to have your system upgraded to Windows 10 – that’s your way in. A click will bring up a reservation process that will hold your spot for an upgrade once the roll out date comes by.

Those wanting to upgrade will have a year from July 29 to do so.

“We designed Windows 10 to create a new generation of Windows for the 1.5 billion people using Windows today in 190 countries around the world. With Windows 10, we start delivering on our vision of more personal computing, defined by trust in how we protect and respect your personal information, mobility of the experience across your devices, and natural interactions with your Windows devices, including speech, touch, ink, and holograms,” Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of the Operating Systems group (OSG), said in the company’s official blog.

“We designed Windows 10 to run our broadest device family ever, including Windows PCs, Windows tablets, Windows phones, Windows for the Internet of Things, Microsoft Surface Hub, Xbox One and Microsoft HoloLens—all working together to empower you to do great things.”
