A new report to be released by ACTU president Sharan Burrow at the Industrial Relations Society World Congress in Sydney today is expected to find women will be hardest hit by the financial crisis.

The report entitled, ‘The Impact of the Recession On Women’ conducted by independent public policy research centre The Australia Institute, is expected to reveal that while official figures suggest women haven’t fared as badly in the recession as men, more detailed analysis shows that women will face further difficulties in the labour market with low wages and a lack of work hours set to get worse.

Ahead of the release, Burrows said: “Women are missing out on decent jobs and they are being underpaid.”

Report author David Richardson said women were at a significant disadvantage.

“Women face chronic difficulties in the labour market and that those difficulties have been exacerbated by the global financial crisis,” Richardson said in a statement.
