Applications open for Australia’s biggest deep tech event

Australia’s premier deep tech incubator, Cicada Innovations, is seeking out the country’s most promising deep tech ventures to feature at the upcoming Cicada x Tech23, the nation’s largest deep tech conference.

Each year, the groundbreaking innovations showcased at this event have a profound impact on the lives of Australians. For instance, Morse Micro, a past participant, played a pivotal role in the development of Wi-Fi technology.

Cicada has noticed that many startups may not recognize their projects as deep tech, despite their potential to address significant global challenges. They encourage founders and innovators from all stages and industries to explore whether their work qualifies as deep tech, emphasizing that it’s not limited to fields like medicine or agriculture but encompasses any pioneering solution to major issues.

Participating in Cicada x Tech23 offers exposure to a diverse network of investors, leaders, and partners, fostering growth and impact for the selected ventures.

Sally-Ann Williams, CEO of Cicada Innovations, highlights the importance of supporting deep tech endeavors and expanding the definition of deep tech founders beyond traditional stereotypes. She emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to foster innovation across diverse talent pools. “You’d be hard-pressed to find someone whose life hasn’t been impacted by at least one of these technologies that we now take for granted. Yet they are the result of decades-long deep tech endeavours that we as a nation must support by taking an interconnected, holistic approach.

“This is the type of support we hope to provide at Cicada x Tech23.But our increasing observation is that we have so many promising deep tech founders on home soil who are busy building truly world-changing innovations solving global problems – yet have no idea whatsoever that they actually classify as ‘deep tech’. So many instead think of their companies as siloed into subsets of very specific industry verticals, rather than also falling under the broader deep tech umbrella.

The success of past events underscores the value of Cicada x Tech23, with participants securing funding and partnerships as a direct result of their involvement.

Applications for Cicada x Tech23 are open until April 12, 2024. Interested parties are encouraged to showcase their problem-solving approach and unique technology.

The final 23 ventures will be announced on May 17, 2024, with the event scheduled for August 7, 2024, at Cicada Innovations’ headquarters in Eveleigh, Sydney.
