Rio Tinto targets passive job seekers with LinkedIn Recruiter

LinkedIn has inked a deal with Rio Tinto to use LinkedIn Recruiter to find and hire new employees, with Rio Tinto promoting job opportunities with the company through LinkedIn’s professional network.

linkedinLinkedIn Recruiter will allow Rio Tinto’s recruiters to tap into “passive job seekers”, those that are currently employed elsewhere, but would be interested in opportunities if they arose elsewhere. Rio Tinto will leverage LinkedIn to recruit particularly at the higher end of the company hierarchy, as the company seeks to attract talent to the company internationally.

The announcement of Rio Tinto embracing LinkedIn’s Recruitment Solutions product comes after Steve Barham was brought in to open LinkedIn’s Sydney Office as director of recruitment solutions for LinkedIn Australia and New Zealand.

“There is currently a strong demand for skilled talent in the resources sector. In order to stay ahead, companies are becoming more proactive about reaching out to candidates,” said Barham “LinkedIn enables Rio Tinto to move beyond the traditional approach to recruitment and target passive candidates who are not active job seekers.”

Colleen Devine, Rio Tinto’s Group Advisor – Talent Sourcing agrees LinkedIn has become a useful addition to the business.

“When we first accessed LinkedIn Recruiter the potential of the system was immediately apparent. We targeted the most difficult roles within the business and from our first four searches we were able to identify and connect with suitable people,” said Colleen. “These relationships have translated into filling niche roles across the business.”

“LinkedIn Recruiter is an excellent communication tool which has added a new dimension to our attraction strategy,” she said.
