Digitise this! Augmented reality apps take off

As businesses come to grips with the rise and rise of the digital world, more are finding new ways to make the most of technology.

Retailer Sportsgirl has created an augmented reality app called Sportsgirl Explore that works in conjunction with its quarterly magazine, released both online and in stores.

The app works by allowing users to scan icons on pages to unlock media content like videos, tutorials, and music downloads, while the icons on items also link directly to the online store to enable simple purchasing.

E-commerce platform Bigcommerce has also created an iPhone app and mobile optimised site to help SMBs work better, help people manage their businesses directly from their smartphone.

Mitchell Harper, co-CEO of Bigcommerce, believes creating an app was the logical next step for the company.

“Mobile penetration is through the roof for consumer apps like Facebook and Instagram, and it’s no different for business apps. Business owners are no longer chained to their desks,” Harper said.
