Groupon to operate under new domain

Groupon Australia has announced it will no longer operate under the Stardeals brand it’s been utilising since February, with all traffic to be redirected through to Groupon.com.au.

The news signals an end to Groupon’s fight with rival Scoopon, which it accused of “domain squatting” in a lawsuit after Scoopon registered the groupon.com.au domain name and trademark over eight months ago. At the time, Scoopon said it registered the Groupon domain for “defensive purposes” to ensure local consumers didn’t confuse Groupon with Scoopon, iTech Reports said.

Groupon Australia CEO Patrick Schmidt said he’s excited the company has retained control of the domain.

“The Groupon brand is known the world over as the pioneer of local ecommerce. It’s a trusted brand that many people know, so to have that strength now fully behind us is great.”

“Naturally we’re communicating the change in brand to all our customers and merchant partners and reinforcing our commitment to deliver the very best deals and unmatched levels of customer and merchant support,” he added.

Groupon, launched in November 2008 in Chicago, features daily deals on the best stuff to do, eat, see and buy in 43 countries around the world.
