Australian online ‘groupon’ industry booms

Businesses leveraging “group coupon” buying sites in Australia such as Jump On It, Spreets and Ouffer has boomed, with all three bringing the Groupon concept from the USA to satisfy local demand.

Online retailThe internet coupon businesses is big business, with Jump On It for example using the scale of group buying offers to encourage businesses to offer significant savings to consumers in order to achieve economies of scale and reach a whole new market.

Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter has lead to an increase in activity around such group coupon sites, with JumpOnIt.com developing a following of 450,000 on Facebook since April this year, and both Spreets and Ouffer leveraging both Twitter and Facebook to drive sales.

So positive is the outlook for Australia’s uptake of online coupons that Jump On It has received $1.3m in funding from a consortium of investors lead by Roger Allen (Chairman of Allen and Buckeridge) and Nextec Capital. The company is headed by Australia’s leading technology venture capitalist; Roger Allen as Chairman; joined on the board by Peter James, ex-CEO of Adcorp; and the executive team including serial internet entrepreneur Colin Fabig (CEO), James Gilbert (ex-Genis)  and ex-Infochoice and founder of Harrow Media Adam Rigby (COO).

Jump On It’s popularity can largely be attributed to social networks. For instance, before being established, it developed a “tribe” through Facebook to offer merchants a large and exclusive sales avenue, and to ensure its “deals” spread virally. Its “I Love” Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth fan pages have now become the largest in Australia, at 450,000 fans and up to 2000 comments a day. These Facebook groups are larger than the MasterChef Facebook page, currently at around 200,000.

For Jump On It alone, tens of thousands of coupons have been sold to Australians since May. Over 50 of its deals have exceeded 500 sales, including Hoyts Cinemas, which sold out at 5,000 coupons in early July.

    Not worthwhile.
You would be better advertising your deals on ozbargains.

Deals are made when there are no competition and lots of demand. Nothing remains the same forever. Have to search or make the best deal yourself. Bring back the haggling.

I bought 2 pairs of havaiana thongs in August, 2011 from this lot, firstly they told me that Oz thongs, the group they had organised to bring in the merchandise could not handle it, then they said that if you hung on they would get another company to deliver them and that they would arrive (I was lead to believe before Christmas). Jump on it then stated that they would keep their purchasers informed at least fortnightly, which they did for a fortnight!!! I have not heard anything from them, have not received my haviaianas and when (or more precisely IF) they bother to contact me again I would hope that I will finally have the thongs that I ORDERED IN GOOD FAITH.
I do know that I won’t be buying from jump on it any time soon, so disgusted and let down!

After registering the other day and making my first purchase I received my email to say ‘here is your voucher’
I received this after 12pm on the Wednesday 22.2.12. I open my emails on Thursday 23.2.12 and proceeded to follow the instructions. It did not work and after contacting your website for support and reading and re-reading the email 3 or 4 times I noticed that voucher is Valid from 22.2.12 to the 22.2.12. THAT IS NOT EVEN 12 HOURS TO REDEEM MY VOUCHER!!!
And the response from your support team?? “I am sorry to inform you that in this case, your voucher has expired.” and “We are unable to refund expired vouchers as it is displayed on the voucher and part of our terms and conditions.” Nowhere in your terms & Conditions or Fine Print does it say that I have less than 12 hours to redeem this voucher.
This was my first purchase and my last from these guys……Buyers BEWARE!
